HOW HAS IT TAKEN ME SO LONG TO WRITE THIS POST?! For the Harry Potter fan that I am, this is an embarrassment.
One of my favorite things about the Harry Potter books is that everyone loves them for different reasons, took different lessons from them, and had different characters touch our hearts in different ways. I’m currently listening to the series again on Audible while I drive to/from work (if you haven’t listened to the books you are missing out….the narrator is incredible) and I feel like I’m taking something new from it even after all this time (always).
Your list cannot include Harry, Hermione, Ron or Dumbledore. Because we all love them, duh.
Can only be 5 characters. I realize we all probably have a top 10 list.
Your list doesn’t have to be in order. (My list is not in order)
ONE: Professor Minerva McGonagall
I want to be Professor McGonagall when I’m older. Though she wouldn’t have made this top 5 list when I first read the books as a middle schooler, she is definite favorite of mine now that I’m older. And, in the movies, she is one of the best characters hands down. She’s funny, she’s tough, she doesn’t put up with anyone’s bullshit but above all, she’s fair and loyal. She asks a lot of her students but does it because she wants them to be their best. I admire her strength, her sarcastic sense of humor and her softer side. She is the queen of sass and damn it, I love her for it.
Favorite Professor McGonagall quote: “It’s high time your grandmother learned to be proud of the grandson she’s got, rather than the one she thinks she ought to have – particularly after what happened at the Ministry.” (from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince)
TWO: Ginny Weasley
If we are basing this list on the films alone, Ginny would seem like a weird choice for this list but if you’ve read the books (and know me) you know why Ginny hands-down makes it. I love Ginny. She’s sassy, she’s tough, she’s brave, she’s fierce and she’s tenacious. Ginny is wise and emotionally mature beyond her years, and she’s grounded. I love that even though she’s constantly surrounded by boys, she always fits right in. And I LOVE that she ends up marrying Harry after a successful career as a professional Quiddich player.
Favorite Ginny Weasley quote: “The thing about growing up with Fred and George," said Ginny thoughtfully, "is that you sort of start thinking anything's possible if you've got enough nerve.” (from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince)
THREE: Luna Lovegood
I think we can all learn a lot from Luna Lovegood; the most important lesson being that you should be yourself no matter what anyone thinks. She’s also a Ravenclaw, which is the house I was sorted into. I think a lot of people are quick to discount Luna as an airhead or dismiss her for her weird theories or made up animals, but Luna is always true to herself and willing to give someone who has judged her a second chance. I love Luna because she’s quirky, she’s incredibly witty, she’s a good friend and she looks at the world in such a special way that she’s able to see things not many others can see. She’s also the only other person in Harry’s life who understands grief and can empathize with him.
Favorite Luna Lovegood quote: “Thank you so much, Dobby, for rescuing me from that cellar. It’s so unfair that you had to die, when you were so good and brave. I’ll always remember what you did for us. I hope you’re happy now.” (Harry Potter and the Dealthy Hollows)
FOUR: Molly Weasley
Are you sensing a trend here? No one writes a strong woman like JK Rowling and Molly Weasley is no exception. I LOVE Molly Weasley. She is mom goals: an amazing, perfect combo of strict and laid back; she’s a caregiver but also a very talented witch who is loyal and passionate. She’s also the only one in the book who cusses, BONUS POINTS. I love how Molly cares for everyone around her so effortlessly and takes the time to make everyone feel like they’re part of the family and basically I want to be like Molly Weasley when I’m a mom.
Favorite Molly Weasley quote: “Not my daughter, you bitch!!” (Harry Potter and the Dealthy Hollows)
I have a soft spot in my heart for Dobby and I sobbed when he died. You will never find a more true and loyal friend than him. He shows up for his friends, which I absolutely love about him. He also stands up for them when he feels they are being treated unfairly. I love how he finds joy in something as simple as a sock and how he collects clothes after Harry sets him free. I mean, honestly, Dobby is one of the best characters in the series: he is the true definition of a friend.
Favorite Dobby quote: “Dobby is a free elf!” (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)
